This cow, 7199, has raised a good calf every year, stays in good flesh year round.
She is an example of a cow with Certified Grassfed Performance™. See her bull calf below.
Heifer Certification Criteria
1. The Sire: The heifer must be from a Red Angus sire that is phenotypically correct for beef production, be easy fleshing on grass, be a frame score 4 to 5, and can maintain a body condition score of 4+to during breeding season.
2. The Dam: The heifer must be from a Red Angus dam that is also phenotypically correct, proven to be easy fleshing, a 4 to 5 frame score, an early breeder, maintains a minimum 5 condition score year round on good native grass with some fescue for winter grazing and limited protein supplement, has indications of having high butterfat milk, be a good mother, smooth hair coat, and a record of weaning a calf 60+% of her body weigh at weaning time.
3. Heifer calves are weighed at weaning and when 12 months old. Heifers are required to weigh 700 Lbs. by the time they are 15 Mos. old, and be from a 4 to 5 frame score cow. Heifers must have a minimum pelvic area of 140 cm/2 at 13 months of age.
4. Heifers are required to have the same desirable qualities of their mother and sire. As the heifer matures she will be evaluated for indications for high butterfat milk production. Even though her performance while nursing on her mother will be recorded, her ability to continue gaining on grass after weaning and while raising a calf will be the real test of her genetic merit. If the heifer appears to have high performance potential, we will assign her a certification number, and arrange for AI breeding to a selected Red Angus sire. If she does not obtain an AI pregnancy her certification status will be removed. Also, her certification status will be removed if she does not develop indications for high butterfat milk production.
5. Note: Information for the above certification requirements is obtained from measurements and observations from the time the heifer is born to the time she rebreeds and is confirmed pregnant with her second calf. Even though many of the qualifications are determined by subjective measurements, we have found the above criteria to be very useful in selecting for replacement breeding stock. Even though we used to have a small registered Red Angus cow herd, we have found that our best producing, easy fleshing cows that require the lowest maintenance and have the best calves, are in our commercial herd and have met our Certified Grassfed Performance™ requirements.

Bull Certification Criteria
1. The Sire: Bull calves must be sired by a Red Angus bull with proven easy fleshing ability on grass. The bull must have a 4 to 5 frame score and be able to maintain a body condition score of 4+ during breeding season.
2. The Dam: Bull calves that are considered for possible certification must be from cows that have been previously given grassfed performance certification. These cows usually have the ability to nurse the calf for 9-10 month and still be in good condition for the next calf.
3. The bull calf has to demonstrate that he has the easy fleshing ability of his parents. Bull calves however need time to reach maturity before their “easy fleshing” ability can be truly evaluated. Even though a bull calf may have performed well on its mother, his ability to maintain his condition and performance during breeding season can only be evaluated at that time. If the bull calf is from certified parents and his yearling performance is outstanding, we will give him a certification ear tag and number to make tracking him easier until after his first breeding season when a final decision will be made concerning his overall performance.
4. Steer calves may also be given certification status if their performance on grass is satisfactory. Their easy fleshing ability and growth rate on grass without growth hormones will determine their certification eligibility.
